Serena Williams Defeated at Wimbledon

The streak is over.

Serena Williams was defeated at Wimbledon on Monday by Sabine Lisicki.
The stunning upset was no doubt a major blow to the world No. 1 player, who had won 34 consecutive matches prior to facing off against the 23rd-seeded German on Centre Court.

With her 6-2, 1-6, 6-4 win, Lisicki now advances to the quarterfinals at the All England Club, where she will take on Kaia Kanepi.

"I'm still shaking. I'm so happy," Lisicki said during a post-match interview. "Serena played a fantastic match. She's such a tough opponent. Just an amazing feeling to win this match."
Just last month, Williams defeated Maria Sharapova to win her second French Open.

Speaking of Williams and Sharapova, the two found themselves battling it out in a much different way at the start of Wimbledon, when Sharapova found herself fighting back at comments made by Williams in a recent Rolling Stone interview.

"Obviously I have a tremendous amount of respect for Serena and what she's achieved on the court," Sharapova said during a pre-tournament press conference. "If she wants to talk about something personal, maybe she should talk about her relationship and her boyfriend that was married and is getting a divorce and has kids."

The remark stemmed from Williams telling the music magazine, apparently refering to Sharapova: "She's not going to be invited to the cool parties. And, hey, if she wants to be with the guy with a black heart, go for it." The guy in question was thought to be Sharapova's boyfriend, Grigor Dimitrov, who is one of Williams' rumored exes.

Williams subsequently apologized to Sharapova, saying at a pre-Wimbledon news conference that she "made it a point to reach out to Maria...because she was inadvertently brought into the situation by assumptions made by the reporter."
