Alicia Silverstone Launches Vegan Breast Milk Sharing Program
Vegan and mother-of-one Alicia Silverstone is looking to help out other vegan mothers.
As a way of assisting new moms who want to breastfeed their babies, but struggle to produce enough milk, the 36-year-old actress has launched Kind Mama Milk Share, an initiative designed to encourage women to donate breast milk.
"Because we are a community of beautiful souls who recognize the importance of food as health, I say we help support those mamas and babies who need a hand during one of the most important times in their lives," Silverstone wrote on her blog, The Kind Life. "It's why I'm starting the Kind Mama Milk Share, a way for moms to connect with other moms in their area. If you have milk to share--post it! If you are in need of milk--post it! Think of all the babies we can help raise together!"
Since welcoming son Bear Blue in 2011, Silverstone has also been very vocal about her parenting style.
The Clueless star made headlines last year when she posted a video that showed her feeding Bear with chewed food that she passed directely from her mouth to his.
Silverstone quickly defended herself from folks poking fun at her and insisted she had a historical precedent to back her up.
"People have been feeding their kids that way for thousands of years," she was quoted as saying at the time. "It's a weaning process. It's just a thing that has been going on for thousands of years and I didn't think I was inventing anything."
Not to mention, Bear seemed to love it. In the caption that accompanied her video, Silverstone wrote the her son "literally crawls across the room to attack my mouth if I'm eating"—which, in this particular case, was a lovely gourmet feast of mochi and miso-infused veggies.
"I wasn't saying this was anything somebody should do," Silverstone insisted. "I wasn't trying to be independent or cause such a ruckus. I'm very glad that I did it."
